Happy New Year's from Dog Photographer Julie Deans

It's here! Another year has come and gone, faster than ever. It seems the older you get, the less time we have and the less time we have, the older we get ever faster.

So cherish the time that you have with your friends, pets and loved ones, and if you need to, cover the grey with a bit of colour, it helps with the aging process.

Here's wishing everyone a safe and happy new year, hope all your dreams and wishes come true, and those pesky New Year's resolutions too. Oh, and Brandy says make sure you drink responsibly! All the best!

Hot Dogs Anyone? By Pet Portrait Artist Julie Deans

Everyone likes hot dogs right? My hubby is a little overzealous with these eatables, not the most nutritious food, but hey, you only live once right, why not enjoy it...

So inspired by my hubby's love of this unhealthy item, and my love of dogs, I came up with this painting for the child's room.

Acrylic on pre-stretched canvas, and oh what fun this one was!

Christmas Is In The Air (and the lens), by Pet Photographer Julie Deans

Oh yes, it is that time of year once again. It's approaching quickly now, and though I knew it was coming, it still sort of takes me by surprise each year, and I am once again unprepared for the Holiday Season.

But even though I am somewhat unprepared, I continue to be distracted by photographic opportunities and artistic ideas, rather than taking the time to shop for gifts or bake.

And here are the results of some of this distraction - how could I resist?

I hope that everyone has a safe, and happy Holiday Season, a Merry Christmas and Wonderful New Year!!!! All the best.

Meet Booker - Jack Russell Rescue of Ontario

Booker is approximately 3 years old and is a JRT/Chihuahua cross. He is quite timid until he gets to know you and then he is your best friend! He is very sweet, absolutely loves to sit on your lap and roll over for a good belly rub. Booker has had a rough beginning to his life and was going to be shot until he came to JRT Rescue. He is from a puppy mill where he was used for breeding, and has not been socialized much. However, he is extremely dog friendly and loves to play with other dogs. He has never been walked on leash, and going out the front door is still quite traumatic for him, so his new owners will have to be aware of this. But he does love to be outside, and will happily spend hours in the backyard with the other dogs. He would probably do well in a fairly quiet home without small children. He is completely crate trained and vetted. Booker needs to learn to trust people and be comfortable with them. He will make someone a fabulous, loyal pet if he is given the chance. Adoption Fee: $250.00

Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • House trained

Check out Bookers Pet Finder page for more images.

There are always plenty of gorgeous, loving Jacks just waiting for a second chance at a new family, especially at this time of year.

Little Angels, by Artist Julie Deans

I don't get the chance to create many people portraits, as my forte is pets, especially dogs, but I was given the opportunity to capture these two beautiful girls in a portrait, and am delighted with how it turned out.

This is an 8"x10" pencil piece, and due to some unforeseen circumstances, it may be available for sale.

If anyone is interested in a portrait of their loved one, please feel free to contact me, or check out my website for details.

Schnauzer, by Artist Julie Deans

I just finished working on this little pup over the weekend, and am on my way to deliver it to the client today. A nice little 5"x7" in pencil makes a perfect Christmas gift. I do love the smaller drawings. I am still able to create all the detail needed, but in a nice compact package, easy to frame and place anywhere in your home.

And, if you're looking for a terrier-type dog, with a little less 'tude, and a non-shedding coat, the mini's are the guys for you. Super smart and a nice size, they make great family dogs and excellent agility competitors.

As always, if anyone is interested in having a portrait of their pet or loved one completed, please do not hesitate to contact me, and visit my website for details:

Vote for Toronto Cat Rescue!

Poppy hard at work

Please take a moment to visit the following page and vote for the Toronto Cat Rescue.

Founded in 1994, the Toronto Cat Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer organization that has been helping homeless cats where ever possible. My sister had the opportunity to adopt from them, and got a wonderful, loving companion. Poppy, the kitty, was on death row, but TCR pulled her, and found her a warm loving home in my sisters arms.

Please take a moment to register and vote at the website below so that the TCR has a chance at a $25,000 grant that would greatly help their organization and the homeless cats that they support.

Two Dachshunds Posing - Artist, Julie Deans

What an adorable little pair of dogs!! And very photogenic I might add.

This is the result of a photo-shoot from a couple weeks ago with Andy and Ruby. The weather was great, the air was crisp, but sun kept us warm, and the dogs were entertaining. These little canines have the "terrier 'tude", and considering they were originally bred to hunt badger, they needed that 'tude to be able to do their job. The personalities of these little hounds are very terrier-like, and remind me of Jack Russells (but a bit watered down, which is a good thing - no dog really compares to JRT's in 'tude).

A fun photo-shoot with great results and the owners were extremely pleased.

If you are interested in having a photo-session with your canine companion, please visit my website for more details: www.juliesillustration.com/photography or email me any time. Photo-sessions are completed on location, with natural lighting in the Halton Region.

Remember

Please take a moment this Remebrance Day to reflect upon our freedom and remember those who have gone before us to make this freedom possible.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

-John McCrae

I'm Addicted! Artist, Julie Deans

The little guy is really quite photogenic, so he's been added to my list of favorite things to photograph along side the little dog for number one spot.

And I can't resist photos of them together - it's really quite the combination, especially since it doubles the cuteness factor. Little boys and Jack Russells go well together.

The little dog was not impressed with this pose. She loathes Halloween because it means that she has to wear her Bee costume. You'd think she'd get used to it by now, since every year I dress her up (the little kids love it!), but noooooo, putting it on is, to her, the equivalent of pouring acid on her back. Can't you see the hate in her eyes? Plus it makes her look fat. Gawd, I can't even do it up, had to tie it on with a shoelace this year, so next year, thanks to two crazy sisters, she will be a skeleton and she'll hate that just as much.

I have two portrait sessions coming up in the next couple weeks, and will post some of the results after they are complete. If anyone is looking to have photos taken of their dogs, please feel free to contact me or visit my website: www.juliesillustration.com and check out the photography page for details.

Fun with Photoshop - Artist Julie Deans

Playing with Photoshop settings to make images look "vintage". It's a whole heck of a process, and I haven't got it quite set the way I want, but I had to showcase these two results.

Above, of course, is the little dog in all her glory, with toy in hand, uh, I mean mouth.

And below, well, I just had to share this because of the artist value and hilarity of the photo. Little E is a wonderful, entertaining subject.

(No babies were harmed in the creation of this photo, and all safety precautions were taken with the little fella during the shoot)

The Salmon Are Here - By Artist Julie Deans

Photo courtesy of Mel who joined the little dog, child, and I on day one.

I finally did it! I made it to Lowville Park in time for the salmon run ... so very proud of myself. Yes, I suppose that's kind of sad, but small things amuse ... well, you know. Be warned, this post is picture heavy, so I won't bore you with too many words, just visions of salmon spawning (love is in the air, or water actually) and fall images taken over the course of two days. Enjoy!

Little dog and child who joined me on day two.

The salmon swimming upstream to spawn.

The inevitable death after the spawn - what an odd way to live.
